What Margazhi has in it ?



Margazhi, the Thamizh month has much more in it than it seems. Margazhi is mirthful month comes at the end of the English year.

Birds chirping around the cold morning, waking up to the Suprabhatham sung by divine M.S. Subbulakshmi amma and various shlokas and sacred chants really makes every day special in this Thamizh Month. Chanting Thiruppavai and Thiruvembavai daily also adds more positivity to our day.

One scientific fact about Margazhi is that, “Oxygen required by human throughout the year would be available in the coldest Margazhi mornings throughout the month”.

Generally, Margazhi reminds all of us about the winter in the first place, then about the music concerts that happens in various places of Thamizh Nadu. Chennai would be the busiest city, hosting various renowned musicians in their sabhas. Many beginners and various artists trained by prominent gurus.

Margazhi is also the time we’ll witness beautiful rangolis and kolams. Women wake up early before sunrise and draw kolams and rangolis in front of their house. Many women excel as a great artisan putting colorful and lovely big kolams and rangolis in the cold morning of Margazhi. Some women make kolams in the previous night itself to save time in the morning and to enjoy the sleep in cold morning. But every women must make kolams only in the morning only.

There is also Vaikunta Ekadashi as well as Hanumanth Jayanthi lined up as a big spiritual events in the month of Margazhi. Sri Rangam in Trichy, which is known as the ‘Bhoologa Vaikuntam’ would be flooded with lakhs of devotees hailing “rangaaa…” and waits for almost 6 – 7 hours to cross the Paramapada Vasal.

Hanumath jayanthi is also an important spiritual event where people would go to Hanuman temples in their neighborhood and offer their prayers and seek blessings from the marvelous and great Lord Shri Hanuman, who is an ardent devotee of Lord Shri Ramachandra.

Aarudhra dharshanam is also one of the important day when people do pooja in home as well as in temple for Lord Nataraja.

Margazhi reminds concerts, rangolis, winter etc.  Margazhi is a Thamizh month full of music, arts and devotion.

Also English festivals like Christmas and New Year falls on this Thamizh month. This means winter vacations for students. Some of the schools here in Thamizh Nadu, distributes cakes to the students. I miss those cakes really. Being kids, we were excited and were eager that on the day of christmas, santa would coome and gift us.

Margazhi is whole month for festivals and celebrations. Making Kolams in front of the house, listening to the Carnatic music concerts, going to temple, chanting shlokas and offering prayers to their favourite Gods, taking active part in various spiritual activities and much more makes everyone of us to hold our fire for the rest of the days is something found unique in Margazhi only.
